Renovation update

So… I finally found some time to do a small review. Moving back to Lithuania (this time not alone but with my wife and babies) was tough. Besides renovating I had to deal with all the documentation, registration, etc. To make things even harder, my wife doesn’t speak Lithuanian and Lithuanians don’t speak english. Well… at least the ladies at the migration department.

But let’s come back to the house…

In the picture you can see Saulius and my dad installing the floor heating system.

The house had crooked wooden floor when we bought it. One corner was higher and another lower. Just the way it is in an old house. But we took our trouble to make everything nice and leveled. There will come white stone tiles everywhere on the ground floor. It will connect all the rooms creating natural flow of the spaces within the house.

The brick wallsIn the old days the village nearby had a brick factory, quite famous in the region. You can still find many houses built from these red bricks in the surrounding areas. Our house was no exception. As we were redesigning the floor plan we collected the bricks from the demolished walls and reused them. My dad did a great job here. He could make the new brick walls very precisely. These red bricks make me feel like my house is my castle…

The brick walls then were plastered. Saulius did it very well. And this stage of renovation for me felt like a breakthrough. It was the point from where the interior started to become more and more like home.

New doors and windows

Els got so crazy about the old front door of the house. She kind of fell in love with it and really wanted to keep it. It was a nice old door indeed. However I really insisted on having a new one. By that time Els didn’t know how cold it gets in winter. But inspired by the old front door our carpenter promised to make the wood of the new door looking old. He also made the rest of the wooden frame windows. Initially we had some doubts about the color but choosing dark brown is maybe a bit unusual for a Lithuanian house but we think it makes our house look really cute and cozy.
